Brave... or crazy.

Matt's a brave man. Either that, or just downright crazy.

He recently decided that he was fed up paying the base barbershop $15 every other week for haircuts that were never perfect anyway. His solution? Having me cut his hair. Me, the girl who didn't go to kindergarten long enough to learn how to cut a straight line through paper... let alone hair. Yeah, I'm going to go with crazy. (Unless he was hoping that I'd butcher his hair so badly that he'd finally be allowed to shave it, in which case it was a fairly good idea on his part.)

Nonetheless, after much prodding, he finally convinced me to whip out the hair cutting kit we'd received as a wedding gift and get to work. And then the tables turned as I had fun trimming away and Matt became scared for his life.
Until, of course, I handed him the mirror and he confirmed that I hadn't mutilated his head.
I may or may not have made him hold a plastic bag in his hands for me to dump all the hair in as I went along. I'm sort of OCD like that sometimes. But I'm pretty sure those perfectionist tendencies helped it all turn out okay in the end, right?
Since then, my lovely friend/Paul Mitchell grad Carolyn taught me how to cut his hair the fancy way, sans clippers. It may take two hours to do but hey, you can't beat the price!

  1. No kidding cutting mens hair is intimidating. I didn't realize at first how wrong it can all go in one little snip :) Congrats on doing fabulous job. Its a great skill to have!

  4. Wow you did a great job! His hair looks soo professional. I wonder if Tony would let me cut his hair...he goes to a $5 place in SLC like once a month or something so I guess for now, that works

  5. Thanks! The first haircut--the one in these pictures--was a little sketchy, but I think I've gotten a little better with each subsequent one. (Like his haircut in the Redlands Temple pictures.) So I guess practice will eventually make perfect :-) The lesson from my hairstylist friend also helped a ton. You should try it, ladies!

  6. His hair really looks great! I have tried many, many times to cut my husbands hair. It's always ended in disaster. The Barber shops here on Fort Hood only charge $7.00. I can live with that price for good looking hair.

  9. Wow, it looks really good! I am always trying to convince Klane to let me try cutting his hair. He will never let me, and I guess it is true that it can all go wrong with one snip. Yours looks awesome though! Teach me your ways! ;)

  10. Wow! you did great! You've inherited your mom's haircutting skills. Aside from buzzing Kevin's hair when he was little, I've never really wanted to try. Once I tried cutting Rachel's hair and then promptly had to call Kim to come to the rescue. None of the girls would let me near their hair from then on for good reason.

  12. Love this post! AND I think Matt's hair looks great. If you're going to be married to a guy who likes his hair to be cut every two weeks, this is a must-have skill! Good for you both for being so brave!

  13. Brian won't let me near his hair, but maybe that is from the early years when I would try to trim the kids bangs, just the front little bit, and of course it was never even. We have the funniest pictures of our little darlings with the crooked bangs. Oh my! Good job Ashley!

  15. Update: Klane told me tonight I could cut his hair! Finally!! (It is getting disgustingly long too... but don't tell him I said that.) So I am going out to find hair clippers tomorrow. Yippee!! Hopefully I can do as good a job as you did. I actually came back to this post hoping to find a few tips or pointers from looking at your pics. Hehehe.
