60 mph with 3 wheels and a sail

We live by a bunch of dry lake beds, which are actually quite wet and beautiful in the wintertime (proof here). The summer, however, is an entirely different story! Luckily, the dry versions provide for a few fun activities, including land sailing. Yeah, I had no idea what it was either but it sounded like fun, so Matt and I decided to give it a try last summer.
It's like a tricycle hammock with a sail, and you steer it much like you would a sailboat. If you catch the winds right, you can go upwards of 60 mph, and you better believe we did! At first, I was nervous about tipping over, but then I did and realized it's no big deal, so we were free to drive as wild and crazy as we wanted to. That's my kind of activity, for sure. Check it out:
That video was put together by my brother Christian, of course. And for the picture version:
We went all the way out to the crashed plane site and felt a little bit like we were on LOST.
It was such a blast!

  11. Your pictures make your adventure look thrilling!

It's hard to reconcile that while most of the country is still dealing with the MONSTER STORM OF 2011. You guys are playing in shorts and t-shirts. I'm completely jealous and I can admit it.

  12. So people are really confused! You did this last summer, right?
Anyway Christian is a pro at putting video together. I am seeing a career in this for that young man.
Love the pics. Wow! So much fun and so much like true sailing. That would have been very tricky to catch the wind just right and go scooting across the sand!

  13. Sorry to be confusing! Sharla's right -- this was last September. I was just driving by our very wet dry lakebeds the other day and remembered I'd never blogged about it. Don't worry, we're suffering through a "cold" winter too :-)

P.S. Sad I didn't get to see you when you were around, but things just got crazy - I'm sure it was the same for you. Once I get out to Cali, we'll have to catch-up! :)
