Wife Business

Tonight, I met Matt in the driveway just as he pulled up from work and informed him that we needed to go to the grocery store. So he smiled and kissed me, then opened my door, put the car in reverse, and drove the four blocks to our destination without asking questions. Once inside, he grabbed a cart and then looked curiously at me as I stared aimlessly at the aisles of food.

"So, um, what do you want for dinner?" I finally asked him, as my gaze moved toward the microwavable dinners we'd grown so tired fond of during our homeless months. It'd been a long day of painting and cleaning, and they were calling my name. Matt laughed, undoubtedly thinking about all the must-be-prepared-and-cooked food we already had back home in our nice, warm kitchen.

"You know, you should really think about embracing this wife business," he teased.

To which, of course, I reminded him that I'll be more than happy to cook again once we've finished getting the house together. Also, that many a husband cooks--my brother-in-law Alex, Matt's home teaching companion, the dad of the family I nannied for...

And then we skipped merrily down the frozen food aisle and lived happily ever after.

  1. I love the minor "dear husband.. you can do it too.." cooking can be such a drag. i think my least favorite part of it all is actually finding all the ingredients and then that absolute let down when you realize you forgot to buy it.. or the fear that someone won't like what you make. Clearly I'm an insecure foodie:)

  2. haha yes I have come to discover that I was not made to do laundry, scrub toilets, and make meals on a daily basis. I don't know how homemakers do it day in and day out, but I admire them. Also, I finally spoke up and got Chris doing some dishes. One step at a time lol.

  3. I love being a wife and homemaker and it is such a divine and noble calling. You will find great joy in all of those duties eventually! I could hardly wait to be a wife and mother and make my house a home! For so many years I had to juggle work and cooking and cleaning, so it was great to just concentrate on my home. Home is definitly where my heart is! Love you and good luck with your new adventure!

  4. Yes. It is nice to know that I am not the only new wedded wife who finds herself eating out and eating frozen food more than not. Cody doesn't mind cooking but he doesn't like figuring out what to cook, and after a long day of school, work, gym etc. I am sometimes to tired to even think up a meal. I know how you feel! Frozen pizza sometimes is the best because it is a no thought sure way to get food in our bellies during busy days :)
