As if we needed another reason to love Cafe Rio!
Matt and I had such a great Saturday last weekend with our friends Amy and Kenneth and their 13-month old, Danny. Amy and I go way back to junior high in Northern California and their little family just barely moved to Southern California from Utah. It was so nice to hang out with old friends in our new area! Having just left Utah, though, they--like us--were missing Cafe Rio in their lives. Luckily for our little band of former Utahns, there's a new Cafe Rio in Manhattan Beach so we decided to meet there for a delicious pre-beach lunch.
And even luckier for us--when we arrived, we were met with multiple signs happily announcing: "Free food today!" Seriously. We could hardly believe our eyes! They were offering everything on the menu for absolutely free and just asking for, quote, "one or two dollars" in donations to benefit foster children in the area. First of all, that's a fantastic PR/marketing idea for a new area. Second, good for them for working with local charities. And third, score! We gave ourselves a 50% discount on the food and donated the rest. Believe it or not, I think Cafe Rio tastes even better when it's half off and for a good cause. It was the perfect way to kick off our fun afternoon!
I dream about the yummy goodness of sweet pork salad.
Danny liked it so much, he was sad to leave :-)
That kid looks super happy with Matt:)
ReplyDeleteCafe Rio is what I missed the most while living on the east coast. I dream of the Fire Grilled Chicken Salad though. The pork is too sweet for me for some reason. That's awesome that it's in Cali now. My friends and I used to ditch school & drive to Sugarhouse from Ktown for it:)
I'll one day be a great example to many children;)
And thank you for the blog comment. I love that people enjoy my blog, and its not pathetic:)

ReplyDeleteMatt, you are scaring Danny with your big guns.. put those things away around children Man ;)!
ReplyDeleteNo place is complete without family, a temple and Cafe Rio! I'm glad you don't have to be deprived. I have to have my Cafe Rio fix at least every 2-3 weeks.
ReplyDeleteI love Danny's face. Good thing he warmed up to Matt pretty quickly! He was all smiles later on!
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't get much better than good cheap Mexican food for a good cause and then the beach. And I also have to admit sometimes I aspire to be a little more like Matt. Yall gotta come visit soon!
ReplyDeleteHahaha the pic with matt and the screaming baby. Ooooh and cafe rio sounds so good now! Free cafe rio sounds even better! What is it about that? Like when you compliment someones shirt and they tell you they got it on sale for three dollars and that makes it even cuter. Haha.
ReplyDeleteI literally dream of this place Ash. I would give anything to have it for just one meal. I used to eat there at least once a week and I have not had it in over 8 months now. I have the recipe to make it here but nothing does it justice. Please enjoy it for me I'd give anything to have just one bite of a Pork Salad!
ReplyDeleteI've never been to Cafe Rio. I looked it up and there is one in Denver. Next time I'm in Denver I am so going to Cafe Rio. Thanks for the restaurant recommendation.
ReplyDeleteEveryone- Just wait 'till you see Danny's smiles with Matt later on. He warmed right up! Matt has a gift.
ReplyDeleteAng- And it's even better when you are the one with the $3 shirt find! Haha.
Tobi- You must go! There's also a Costa Vida in Aurora if that's easier to get to. I'd get a salad at either place, and they both have free/$1 "kids quesadillas" for the kiddos.
Love my Cafe rio chicken tostada!! Brian lives for the salmon tacos!
ReplyDeleteThat's the first thing I requested to eat when I return to the states. Haha! Serious though. :)
